Internships (FringeTERNSHIPS) Available

for the New York International Fringe Festival (FringeNYC)
What is the New York International ‘Fringe’ Festival?

The New York International Fringe Festival is the largest multi-arts festival in North America. FringeNYC hosts more than 200 different shows, with groups from all over the world, and takes place in New York City each August.

It is an alternative theatre festival, with many new works as well as some classics, meant to give the smaller theatre companies a bigger voice. It is a chance to take a chance. With shows generally ranging from 30 to 90 minutes, FringeNYC is a place to see as much theatre as one possibly can and at the end of it all, find not exhaustion, but inspiration.

In addition to over 1,000 indoor performances, there will be: FringeU (panel discussions, lectures and participant led workshops); FringeJR (for families & groups with children);FringeAL FRESCO (free outdoor events); FringeNYC Propaganda (the online Festival newspaper we produce); FringeHIGH (FringeNYC for teens); and FringeCLUB ( place for FringeNYC participants and audience to unwind and socialize).
We are best known as the birthplace of Broadway’s Tony-Award winning Urinetown! and off-Broadway’s Matt & Ben, Debbie Does Dallas, Play Dead and Silence, The Musical.

Where is FringeNYC?
Participating companies will perform their shows in over 20 different venues, parks and street stages in downtown Manhattan. Our venues are located in geographic proximity to each other generating many opportunities for artists and audience to create a community, which grows stronger every year. Lovely theatres such as Cherry Lane Studio, the Lucille Lortel Theater and theaters at PACE University will be turned into 24-hour venues, each hosting at least ten different companies. Directors, designers, producers and performers converge in an environment unlike any other.

Be assured you will meet people and have a chance to see shows!

When is FringeNYC?
The New York International Fringe Festival takes place each August, ending the Sunday prior to Labor Day Weekend. However, the preparations for FringeNYC start now!

How can I be involved?

We treat all internships as an important part of a well-rounded education, and strive to make sure that our interns come away with a working knowledge of a variety of aspects of theater producing - from the administrative to the technical to customer relations. The work we do is unique and we enjoy sharing our skills and experience with the next generation of Arts Administrators and Technical Artists.
There are two different internships available for students trying to gain a broader knowledge of producing theatre or theatre production / tech. There is no age requirement for either internship position.
We are sorry, but we cannot offer an internship to non-US citizen who does not already have a Visa to be in the country.

In order to produce the highest quality festival, we look for intelligent, personable students to help with the producing and administrative side of the Festival. They gain a wealth of knowledge about how to produce theatre in general and a festival more specifically.
As an Administrative Intern, they would be working under the General Manager, Mr. Christian De Gre and Producing Artistic Director, Ms. Elena K. Holy. The Internship starts in May and can last until the end of the festival, taking the student’s school schedule into account. The interns help us with the many day to day activities it takes to produce a festival of this magnitude; everything from scheduling performances, setting up our FringeCENTRAL headquarters, helping run some of the events during the festival and communicating with the participants, volunteer staff, and audience on a variety of subjects. This is a non-paying Internship.

Help get the word out about FringeNYC. As a Marketing Intern, you'll be an integral part in executing this years marketing plan, including building partnerships, securing restaurnat partners, faciliating contests, monitoring social media, writing feature articles for FringeNYC.org and more. This is a great opportunity to be apart of building awareness for the largest multi-arts festival in North America.  This is a non-paying Internship.

We also offer a theatrical tech internship called a Venue Production Assistant. This intern serves as the technical liaison in one of our twenty venues, and will work with the Venue Director to ensure smooth transition between each of the performances. Under the direction of our technical directors, Venue Production Assistants will become familiar with the equipment in their venue, and be trained on how to solve minor technical issues. They will also be the first candidate for the 12 – 14 shows assigned to that venue to hire as a board op (at a suggested rate of $25 - $50 per performance). With each of the 12 – 14 shows receiving 5 performances over the course of the festival, this could represent a significant stipend – not to mention a great resume addition. The bulk of the work for this internship happens in July and August as we start loading in theaters and continues through the week following the festival. THIS IS A NON-PAYING INTERNSHIP WITH OPPORTUNITES TO WORK WITH THE PARTICIPATING COMPANIES FOR SMALL FEES BY OPERATING THE TECH ASPECT OF THEIR PRODUCTIONS. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE OF PAYMENT FOR THIS INTERNSHIP.

FringeNYC? FringeNYC will celebrate its 19th Anniversary August 14th - 30th, 2015.

FringeNYC? Although FringeNYC is a production of The Present Theatre Company, Inc., it takes:
75,000 audience members
5,000 artists
2,000 registered volunteers
1,200 performances
200 shows
20 venues
18 dollar advance tickets
16 days and
2 full-time employees

to make FringeNYC happen.

We do this? Good question! In 1997, our budget was $74,000. Today, it's more than a million dollars. We must seek and secure support from donors in order to "bridge the gap" between rising costs and our desire to keep ticket prices low. Your donation helps us grow to meet the challenges of the future!  Support of FringeNYC has a tremendous impact on indie theatre. We appreciate it!
